For debaters interested in learning theory, the Sunvite 2022 Semifinals round between College Prep HP and American Heritage Broward RS is an excellent resource. A recording of the round is attached to this post.
The round’s slower pace, compared to most modern PF debates, makes it much easier to follow and understand the structure of good theory debates. It clearly demonstrates how shells are constructed, weighed, and responded to, making it one of the best examples to study for developing strong theory fundamentals.
In order to make the most from this, we recommend that debaters eager to learn good theory do a few things both during and after the round:
Flow: Whether on computer or on paper, try to keep track of each speech by flowing the round. How much can you understand?
Reflect: What went well in the round? What good things did speakers do on either side? Do you agree with the decision given by the judges?
Redos: Using your flow, and your analysis of the round, try and give your own version of a rebuttal, summary, or final focus speech. Feel free to add your own analytics! It is best to do your redo in front of your partner or a friend. See if you can get some of their feedback! Repeat the process if need be.
